How Much Food Should a Maltipoo Eat: Maltipoo Feeding Chart

| | , ,

Maltipoos are a hybrid breed of dog that is created by breeding the Maltese and Toy Poodle breeds.

They were first bred in the US around 20 to 30 years ago and have become increasingly popular.

However, their parents’ Maltese and toy poodles are older breeds of dog.

Members of the Maltese breed have been around since 500 BC, whereas the poodle has its roots in France or Germany.

Maltipoos are one of the smallest dog breeds, weighing around 8 to 20 pounds. Your Maltipoo’s diet can have both short and long-term effects on its health.

Check out our guidelines to learn more about the diet of a Maltipoo dog breed.

How Much Food Should A Maltipoo Eat?

Depending on their size, an average Maltipoo should eat between ½ and 1 cup of food per day. However, the diet can vary depending on the individual dog’s size.

⅓ cup to 324 cups of food per day should be consumed by a Maltipoo weighing 2 to 10 pounds.

In contrast, a Maltipoo weighing 10 to 16 pounds should consume one cup of food a day to 1¼ cups a day.

Maltipoo dogs are a crossbreed of a Maltese and Poodle, so the dog’s weight will vary depending on which breed its the pup of. A Maltipoo pup that has a poodle parent that is a toy breed will be smaller: 5-8 pounds.

A Maltipoo is a crossbreed of a miniature poodle. Miniature poodle crossbreeds usually weigh between 10-20 pounds, so these dogs require less food.

The intensity of a Maltipoo’s physical activity determines how many calories they should consume.

Dogs that are very active need more calories than less-active dogs in order to maintain a healthy weight.

There are a few diet considerations to make depending on the age. Adult Maltipoos need 2-3 meals per day, while puppies will need 3-4.

When you’re in your early stage of growth, you’ll need approximately 4-5 meals per day.

2 to 3-week-old Maltipoo:

In the early phase of Maltipoo puppies, they usually weigh around 1-2 pounds and are mostly exclusively breastfed. During this stage, they rely heavily on their mother or an assistant to feed them.

Puppies are typically fed 4-5 times per day for the first 2-3 weeks of their life. Limiting their meal size to 10-15 mL helps avoid any potential stomach issues.

4 to 5-week-old Maltipoo:

The three-month-old Maltese poodle mix puppies are in the middle of their puppy-hood.

They will usually be eating solid food without much help at this stage, and their owners typically free-feed them by making the food available all the time.

Maltipoo puppies should be fed ¼ – 1/3 cups of food per meal, divided into 4 daily meals. This will help them grow properly during this time period.

6 to 7-week-old Maltipoo:

Six to seven-week-old Maltipoo dogs weigh approximately 1.5 to 2 pounds in this stage. At this age, they are more active and need to eat a little more than the previous stage.

A 6 to 7-week-old Maltipoo should be fed 1/3 to ¾ cups of food per day. Divide into four meals and feed accordingly.

8 to 9-week-old Maltipoo:

As a baby, an 8 -9-week-old Maltipoo is usually very playful and will weigh on average around 1.5 to 2.5 pounds. In this stage, they need ½ cup to ¾ cup of food per day in 4 divided meals.

It is a good idea to feed your dog a snack or two in between meals.

10 to 11 weeks old Maltipoo:

Maltipoo dogs are in their later puppyhood stage, which lasts from 10 to 11 weeks.

A Maltipoo that is 10 to 11-weeks-old will weigh about 2 to 4 pounds and require about ½ cup to ¾ cup of food per day, distributed over 3 or 4 meals.

3-month-old Maltipoo:

By three-months-old, a Maltipoo weighs around two to four pounds. This is the stage in which they’re between late puppyhood and early adolescence.

At this stage, an infant needs to eat about three times a day within ¾ cups of food.

4-month-old Maltipoo:

A Maltipoo puppy is 4 months old and typically weighs around 3 to 8 pounds. This is around the pup’s early adolescent stage of life, and the weight will depend on which Poodle parent it had.

Puppies can double in size during this age which typically spans from the 4th to 5th month.

A Maltipoo dog will reach their half-size at this age, and then grow until they reach their full size, usually around 6 to 8 months old.

Thus, if you have a 4-month-old Maltipoo that weighs 6 pounds, it will likely be around 12 pounds when fully grown.

A Maltipoo needs 1/2 cup of food per day. Divide the amount into three meals and two to three small snacks in between the main feedings.

5-month-old Maltipoo:

The Maltipoo dog is a crossbreed of the Maltese and the Cocker Spaniel usually weighs about 3.5 to 6.5 pounds and needs ¾ cup of food per day divided into three meals. They also need two to three snacks in between the meals.

6-month-old Maltipoo:

Maltipoo puppies are usually around 4-7.5 pounds when they’re 6 months old. Dogs this age should eat between 3/4 of a cup and 1 cup of food per day, as long as it is split into 3 main meals and 2-3 snacks in between.

7-month-old Maltipoo:

The Maltese Terrier puppies usually weigh about 4 pounds to 8.5 pounds and usually need 3/4 cup to 1 cup of food divided into 3 daily meals and 2-3 between those meals.

8-month-old Maltipoo:

Maltipoo dogs usually weigh 4 pounds to 9 pounds when they are 8 months old and are required to eat 1 cup of food daily. Divide it up into 3 meals, with 2 to 3 snacks in-between.

9-month-old maltapoo:

Puppies of this breed come in three sizes: toy, miniature, and standard. Although all are hypoallergenic dogs, the toy breed is the tiniest and easiest to fit into any home.

Standard-sized Maltipoo dogs typically weigh around 6 to 18 pounds and range in price from $300-$1,000.

10-month-old Maltipoo:

Maltipoo dogs are small and get to be fully grown adults when they are 10 to 12 months old. Maltipoos in this age range typically weigh between 6 and 15 pounds.

A little extra food goes a long way during training. Be sure to provide your dog with 1 cup -1 ¼ cups of food per day in 2 meals, and 2-3 snacks or treats in between the meals.

Are You Overfeeding Or Underfeeding Your Maltipoo?

With a Maltipoo, it can be tough to remember if you’re feeding your dog too much or too little. Your Maltipoo may be underfed or overfed depending on some signs and symptoms.

Overfeeding a Maltipoo can lead to problems like obesity, bloating, and trouble breathing. It can additionally  cause joint problems, ear issues, skin disorders and more.

In the event you notice any of these symptoms in your Maltipoo, consult with a veteranian for a proper diagnosis.

One way to avoid overeating is by creating and sticking to a diet chart when it comes to feeding your Maltipoo.

The Maltipoo can suffer from any number of health problems as lethargy, hair loss, hormonal imbalance, impaired wound healing and reduced bone density if they are not fed enough. They may also have a shorter life expectancy.

The immune system function of a Maltipoo may also be impaired if it is underweight. As a result, the Maltipoo is more likely to contract various types of infections and diseases.

To make sure your Maltipoo is getting the food it needs, you need to maintain a diet chart and feeding schedule. You also need to periodically check their weight, to see if they’re underweight.

How Often Should I Feed My Maltipoo?

If your Maltipoo is a 2-3 months old puppy, they need to be free-fed – allowing the pup to eat at any time.

Continue leaving food available for the pup throughout their early stage of growth, so they can feed whenever they want.

When your Maltipoo ranges from 3 to 12 months old, it’s necessary for them to be fed three times a day. You can also provide snacks in-between meals during the training or walk.

If your Maltipoo is over 1 year old, feed them two meals per day and some snacks in-between to ensure they get the nutrition they need.

Recommended Feeding Time

It is not advisable to follow any hard and fast rules when feeding a Maltipoo. However, there are a few general guidelines I would like you to keep in mind.

As I mentioned earlier, you should feed your Maltipoo at least two to three times per day depending on their age. Your Maltipoo should be fed their first meal within one hour of a morning walk.

When it comes to mealtime for your Maltipoo, you should feed them breakfast within 6-7 hours of their last meal.

For example, if they ate dinner at 5 pm, then they would eat breakfast at 11 am the next day.

But that’s not all! Dogs need to eat before they go to bed too! Feed your pup their dinner at least 2-3 hours before bedtime.

Final Thought

A typical Maltipoo should eat 12 to 1 cup of food every day.

However, the diet might also depend on size. ⅓ to ¾ cups of food should be consumed daily by a Maltipoo weighing 2-10 pounds.

A Maltipoo weighing 10-16 pounds, on the other hand, should eat 1-1¼  cups of food every day.
