Feeding Chart: How Much Food Should a Rhodesian Ridgeback Eat?

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large breed dog that commonly grows very quickly. You’ll need to make sure they’re well-fed throughout the day in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Since their bodies demand more food, you’ll need to feed them at regular intervals. Here, we’ve written an article to help you understand what your Rhodesian Ridgeback should eat.

We’ll also give you plenty of information about how to tell when you are overfeeding or underfeeding them. Read on for more details.

How Much Should A Rhodesian Ridgeback Eat?

Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs are bred to be quite active during their entire lives.

As such, you’ll need to feed them a certain amount of food to make sure they’re kept healthy and well-nourished. Adults usually eat about two and a half cups of food each day.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large, independent breed that will grow to be 24 to 27 inches tall and between 70 to 90 pounds. The males of the breed are heavier than females.

Before you figure out how much food to offer your dog, consider their body size, weight, height, gender and age. Puppies will eat less than an adult but they may need more food. You’ll need to feed puppies more often.

A puppy will need to be fed five-six times a day, whereas an adult dog will only need to eat twice.

This is because young puppies cannot eat large portions and will therefore need smaller portions.

Adult dogs can eat more, so you can give them larger meals instead of a few small ones throughout the day.

This will be easier and less confusing for them, and will still keep them happy and healthy.

2 to 3 week old Rhodesian Ridgeback:

A three-week old Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy would need about one quarter to half a cup of food per day.

This can be broken down into more manageable portions over the course of the day, for feeding every few hours.

As a dog owner, you should be feeding them at least five times a day. This will make sure that your dog is fully fed and completely satisfied.

4-5 week old Rhodesian Ridgeback:

A four to five-week old puppy will need about a quarter of a cup of food, or 7 to 10 calories, per day.

That equates to 185 calories each day. Your puppy can only eat small portions at one time, so you should offer them food after two to three hours.

6 to 7 week old Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies:

A six to seven week old Rhodesian Ridgeback will need to be fed up to six times a day. To do this, you should offer them around half a cup of food every day in order to nurture their growth.

Proper nutrition during puppyhood is critical. They need smaller meals more frequently, but cannot eat a lot in one sitting.

To deal with this, you will have to feed them two or three times each day. This way, they get the necessary calories for a healthy and productive life.

8 to 9 week old Rhodesian Ridgeback:

When your dog is 8-9 weeks old, it’s time to increase their food portions.

To provide them with the right amount of calories, you’ll need to give them about 1 cup of food per day. Their diet should be rich in protein and nutrients.

Your pup is going to need to eat a quarter of a cup to one cup of food per day, ideally dividing the meal into four smaller portions.

10 to 11 week old Rhodesian Ridgeback:

Your dog needs to eat one or two cups of food per day during their puppy stage. Eating with the proper calorie intake will help your pup to remain active and healthy throughout the day.

Most dogs during this age are fairly playful and active. If you don’t provide enough food, however, they will appear sluggish and lazy. Make sure to give them enough to eat for a good lifestyle!

3-month-old Rhodesian Ridgeback:

When your dog is three months old, you should feed them about one and a quarter cups of food every day.

This will ensure that your dog eats enough. However, if you care for an active animal who is old for their age, then give them about one and a half cups of food.

4 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback:

If you’re taking care of a 4 month old dog, they need to eat roughly one and a half cups to one and three-quarters cups of food per day.

Divide this into four meals for the day in order to offer them a balanced diet.

When your puppy is still growing, it’s important to let them eat in smaller portions. Otherwise, they won’t be able to eat everything and won’t get the proper number of calories.

5 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback:

Five months old, a Rhodesian Ridgeback needs about 1½ to 2 cups of food daily. You should divide this into four meals so that your pet remains well-fed and healthy.

6 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback:

A 6-month-old Rhodesian Ridgeback will need to eat 2 cups of food every day. They should be spread out into three smaller meals.

Doing this will keep your dog healthy and active as well as give them their daily nutrient requirements.

7 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback:

A 7-month-old Rhodesian Ridgeback needs to eat at least two cups of food per day. To make sure they are getting enough nutrition, this dog should be eating at least twice a day.

8 months old Rhodesian Ridgeback:

To maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle, your eight-month-old Rhodesian Ridgeback should eat about two and a quarter cups of food every day. This should be divided into two to three meals each day.

9-month-old Rhodesian Ridgeback:

When it comes to a 9-month-old dog of the same breed, they should be eating between two and a quarter cup to two and a half cups of food per day with at least 2 meals.

10-month-old Rhodesian Ridgeback:

A 10-month-old Ridgeback should eat 2.5 cups of food a day to make sure they’re getting the vitamins and nutrients their bodies need.

Try to feed your dog at least 2 to 3 meals a day as this will help them reach their required calorie intake.

Are You Overfeeding Your Rhodesian Ridgeback Or Not Feeding Enough?

If you want to make sure your Rhodesian Ridgeback is getting enough food, it’s important to feed them the right amount of how much to feed dogs.

Look for a bowel movement in order to understand if you’re feeding your dog properly. It is common for Rhodesian Ridgebacks to have a loose stool at night or during the evening.

If you see bowel movements that are not firm, then it means your dog may be eating too much.

However, if your pet is having trouble producing a hard stool when going to the bathroom and seem to be constipated, then it means you’re not feeding your dog often enough.

How Often Do You Feed Your Rhodesian Ridgeback?

The frequency at which you should feed your Rhodesian Ridgeback depends mostly on the age and gender of the dog.

To understand how much to feed him, make a note about his age and size before deciding.

A dog’s size plays an important role in determining how much food an adult dog should be eating.

Smaller dogs, for example, in their growth phase will need to eat more often than larger dogs because they are still growing.

Therefore, in order to understand how much food you should provide your dog, age is one of the most important factors to consider.

Recommended Feeding Time

You should not set a time when you should feed your dog. They need different amounts of food depending on their age.

You have to offer it to them much more frequently if they’re young. In that case, it would be best to offer food every few hours, or every couple.

For a dog that is not yet full grown, you’ll need to feed it at least three times per day. On the other hand, once an adult Ridgeback is fully grown, it won’t be as hungry.

So when you’re figuring out meal times for one of these older dogs, match the meal time with your own eating schedule.

Ideally, new dog owners will feed their beloved pet after breakfast, lunch and dinner each day.

A Final Thought

You should feed an adult Rhodesian Ridgeback at least one and a half cups of food every day to keep them healthy.

Younger dogs can eat half that or even just one cup. Consider the age and gender when feeding them.
