Online calculator for determining the amount of Gravel

| |

This gravel calculator may be helpful if you are intending to install a landscape gravel walk. It can simply improve the beauty of your yard with pea gravel pieces. Hence, it will assist you in estimating the amount of material needed to complete all of your desired earthworks. Moreover, we will also discuss the various varieties of gravel to assist you in making the best decision.

Thus, continue reading to learn how to use our calculator to determine “how much gravel do I need?” After all, you don’t want to overpay and end up with a pile of material you’ll never use.

What is Gravel?

Gravel consists of rock pieces. Indeed, the gravel used for ordinary commercial purposes is often smaller in size. However, it can range in size from granular (2mm to 4mm) to boulder. Moreover, the construction of roads, walkways, driveways, and even patios utilize gravel.  Although there are many different varieties of gravel available, some are chosen for their size and shape. Others are selected based on their colour.

Estimating the quantity of gravel required

In general, the calculation of the amount of gravel for a specific project is based on the nature of the project. The converter is used accordingly to determine the quantity of gravel one requires. Please note that the calculator’s price estimate is just an approximate value based on the cost of materials. On the contrary, other costs relating to a project (labour, material delivery, and so on) are exempt from the estimate.

How much gravel do I require?

To calculate the amount of gravel, firstly compute the volume of the gravel or area in question. The usage of gravel with the area should not confuse you; the volume of the gravel is the same as the volume of the area. Therefore, to calculate the volume, follow the steps below.

  1. To begin, determine the length and width of the excavation.

For example, l = 10 feet and w = 10 feet.

  • Calculate the excavation’s area by multiplying the length and breadth together.

A = 10 * 10 = 100 ft2 in our example.

If you want to excavate a more complex shape, you can alternatively type the area of the excavation straight into the gravel estimator.

  • Determine the excavation depth, for example, d=2 feet
  • Now that you have all of the measurements, multiply the area by depth to obtain the volume in cubic feet.

Volume formula: length x width x depth

Volume = 100 * 2= 200 ft3

Please ensure that all measurements are in the same units.

  • Finally, multiply the volume by the density of the material to get the weight of gravel.

However, don’t forget to order additional material to account for waste.

Using a Gravel Calculator:

Overall, the Gravel Calculator is a free tool and also very comfortable to use. Initially, select a material to perform the calculations. It allows you to choose from a vast list of materials as shown in the figure.

The next step is to enter the width, length and depth of the area that can be in any unit including feet, inches, yards, millimeters, centimeters, and meters.

Through this calculator, you can easily calculate the volume, weight, and area required. The volume, weight, and area are in different units as shown in the figure.

Types of gravel:

There are different varieties of gravel available, some chosen for their size and shape and others for their colour. The following are the most prevalent types of gravel:

  1. 3rd Base Gravel

Base gravel is made up of unevenly shaped boulders ranging in size from one to two inches. They provide excellent drainage due to their uneven design. They’re ideal for laying strong foundations.

  1. Pea gravel

Pea gravel consists of small, worn rocks that are approximately 3/8″ in size. Ultimately, frequent preference is given to pea gravel due to their modest size and rounded shape. As a result, they are ideal for driveways, flowerbeds, and walks.

  1. Quarrying Techniques

Additionally, the combination of stone dust, crushed stone, and trap rock in the quarry process, is known as crusher run. Mostly used for constructing driveways, road base, patios and walkways. Once it becomes compact, it will form a smooth surface for driving. In short, it is a one-of-a-kind choice for homeowners.

  1. White Marble chips:

Any property will benefit from the addition of white marble chips. These are chosen frequently because of their appealing appearance. Above all, the stones’ surfaces appear to shine and sparkle, attracting the eye and reflecting sunlight. Therefore, this prevents the property from being too hot.

  • Crushed Stone

Screening and grading of crushed stone makes it appropriate for use in the construction. The finely drawn blend of gray and white hues makes these stones easy to include in any landscaping scheme.

  • Washed Clean Stone:

Washed clean stone is very similar to crushed stone in its composition and manufacture. Despite the step of thoroughly cleaning and removing impurities is additional in the process. Thereby, this ensures that there is no unwanted material amongst the gravel.
