Sandakphu is located in the region of West Bengal at an altitude of 12,000ft. It is known as the highest peak in the state of West Bengal. Sandhakhu means “Height of the poison plant”.It is named after the plants that grow near the top. The best view of Kanchenjunga, it is also known as sleeping Buddha. On a clear day, you can easily spot Mt Kanchenjunga (3rd highest peak in the world), Mt Everest(the highest peak), Lohatse(south peak) and Makalu. The scenic wilderness and wildlife of Singalila National park has a numerous fascinating Birdlife, animals, and flora will stun you with its diversity.
How to reach
By Rail: New Jalgapuri is the major railway station located in the southwest of Sikkim. If you are coming from any northeastern states like Delhi try to take any northeastern train which directly goes to NJP.
By Air: you can take a flight to Bagdogra and then hire a cab/taxi.
Best time to visit
Spring is considered to be the best time to trek Sandakphu (April-May). Wildflowers are blooming and the beauty of rhododendron trees is at the fullest. The weather is sunny and pleasant, trekkers can enjoy the beauty of the place and the peaks to the fullest. The monsoon season is not ideal for visiting Sandakphu due to heavy rainfall.
