Nothing is more beautiful than fresh, dewy skin. It has a glass-like glow about it that everyone wants, but it seems almost impossible to achieve. So what’s the best way to get this beautiful, almost poreless skin? Well, it all starts with your skincare routine.
The current dewy skin trends are inspired heavily by South Korea. Celeb makeup artist Geoffrey Rodriguez explained to DermStore.com, “The inspiration comes from the Korean beauty trend known as ‘glass skin,’ which basically translates to a poreless, dewy complexion that has been enhanced with a luminesce sheen or finish.” He continued, “Compared to some of the other popular beauty trends such as contouring, or matte skin, which refract light and can look very heavy and artificial in natural daylight, ‘glass skin’ ultimately looks softer and perhaps, therefore, more flattering.”
So what’s the first step in getting this much sought-after skin? A fresh, clean face.
1. Wash Your Face
Keeping your face clean is an important way to start any skincare routine. You’re going to want a lightweight face wash that won’t dry your skin out. Look for a moisturizing cleanser that will help keep your face hydrated.
The Korean skincare process suggests double cleansing your face with an oil-based cleanser, followed by a light, water-based cream/foam cleanser. Oil-based cleansers help break down makeup and (surprisingly) help clear up any excess oil and dirt. Following that up with a second cleanser helps ensure all the grime from the day and your makeup is completely washed off.
It’s also good to remember that oil-based cleansers aren’t always the best choice for people with acne-prone skin, so remember to take that into consideration if you’re thinking of double-cleansing your face.
2. Keep It Toned
After washing your face you’re going to want to close up your pores with the help of a moisturizing toner. You can choose whether you prefer to spray your face with a mist version or use the classic cotton ball application. Today’s toners are equipped with all kinds of great nutrients, like fatty acids and antioxidants, to help fight the aging process and keep your skin beautiful.
3. The Magic Serum
There are many serums out there to help you get the dewy skin of your dreams, but there is nothing quite like hyaluronic acid. This hydration-boosting magical serum is your secret weapon.
“This step provides a hydration boost due to its natural ability to attract and hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. This translates to skin that looks healthy, plump and dewy,” Chaneve Jeanniton, MD, FACS, an oculofacial plastic surgeon and founder of skincare line epi.logic, told Elle. “For oily skin types, I know adding moisture may seem counterintuitive, but the oil-free hydration provided by hyaluronic acid helps reduce sebum production and balances skin moisture levels,” she explained. Once you add hyaluronic acid to your routines you’re going to wonder how you ever did anything without it.
There are also plenty of other amazing serums and face oils that can help your skin look its absolute best. You can pick one that contains collagen, vitamin C, and even ones that help fight acne as well.
4. Moisturize It!
You’re going to want to find a light, oil-free moisturizer that will keep your face beautiful and hydrated without giving you a greasy look. A good moisturizer will help lock in your serums and create a gorgeous base, especially if you wear makeup.
5. Lose that Dead Skin
Once or twice a week you’re going to want to exfoliate your face. According to makeup artist Hilary Kline it “is critical to get that dewy look.” She explained to DermStore.com, “In fact, it helps buff away those dead layers of skin and helps reveal a brighter complexion.”
It may seem tempting but please don’t reach for that apricot scrub, though. Unfortunately, those little gritty beads in those types of mechanical scrubs can wreak havoc on your skin and the environment. Those small beads can cause micro-tears in your skin, leaving it inflamed. The microbeads can also harm marine life as well.
Instead, you can opt for a vibrating facial brush or tool to help gently slough that dead skin off for you. Dermaplaning, which is the removal of the peach fuzz on your face, can also remove the dead skin as well. There are also amazing chemical exfoliators out there that can give your skin a beautiful glow.
6. Mask-erade Party
A good skincare routine requires a little self-care as well. Once or twice a week opt for a nice skin mask to help give your skin a good reset and boost of moisture and nutrients. You can go for a mask that you’ll need to wash off or you can choose a Korean beauty-inspired sheet mask instead. Either route you go, you’re going to want to choose something that will help soothe your skin from any inflammation, lock in moisture, and promote elasticity.
7. A Highlight for the Gods
The right makeup can also help you achieve dewy skin as well. Pick a light-weight, moisturizing foundation (or a tinted moisturizer if you’d prefer something even lighter), then add a little highlighter onto the high points of your face. Highlighters come in a variety of shades and colors to help you look as naturally ethereal or magical as you want. If you’re not sure where to start gently apply some to your cheekbones and blend out.
